First Thing First
Decide how you want to paint the background of your canvas. You may want to leave it plain, paint it a solid color, or paint stripes. The picture I saw had black and white stripes, I was in love. 🙂
Do to the fact that Mr. E loves using tape around here we don’t have any masking tape. So we pulled out a ruler and a pencil to make our stripe lines. We made the lines 1 inch thick.
Painting Time
The foam paint brushes I had (read had, Miss S pulled one apart while my mom and I were finishing…) were 1 inch thick. This made it really easy to paint the lines in the middle of the canvas.
I don’t have the sturdiest of hand and my lines are not as straight as I’d like. But the good thing is, no one will know or even care! This is where masking tape might be a good option for you if having straight lines is a must.
Remember to paint the sides and onto the back just a bit so it has a nice finished touch to it.
Button, Button, Who Has the Button
Have you every played that game?? Haha!
Anyways, it’s time to glue your buttons on! While our paint was drying I was nursing and laying Miss N down for a nap. My mom made a paper heart pattern.
I’m really glad she did, because I was just going to try to wing it… It would not have worked. We just laid the paper heart where we wanted it to be on our canvas and lightly traced it.
When it was time to glue buttons on I tried two different tactics. I first just started gluing the buttons on, very randomly. This did not work! Haha! I had to pull the hearts off and repaint a bit. (Don’t judge me because I totally used my finger to repaint… #lazycrafter.)
Then I tried to lay all the buttons down before I glued. This also didn’t work too well.
So my last attempt was to start on one side and try to squeeze the buttons in the heart shape as best as I could. I have gaps between my buttons showing the painted canvas behind. I really love how it turned out.
My mom started the same way as my last approach. One smart women! 🙂 She did an overlaying effect so there wasn’t canvas showing through her buttons. This turned out really cute and I love the 3D effect.
This craft took about 30-60 minutes. We may have had some little girl interruptions. 🙂 We did this cutest button heart Valentine’s craft while they were having quiet time. But, that didn’t last too long. Grammy + a craft = naughty cute girls. 🙂 But I love them with my whole heart.
One of my sisters also did this craft a few weeks earlier and she used a wood background. Love it!
This cutest button heart Valentine’s craft is so easy. And it is has the potential to be personalized in many ways. Send me a picture of how yours turns out on Instagram (and while you are there, follow me to get the latest).

I made it twice (on the wood) and I found it easiest to lay the buttons down first, even though they didn’t all end up in the original placement, and had to change some bottoms around. Each one is unique!
Each one is definitely unique! We should have asked for expert advice from you first. 🙂
