I love this idea! If you filled them with rice, then the kids can use them at hot packs later. I make hot packs like this and like you, I usually have trouble with the thread and bobbins too! My kids love little rice hot packs though, especially when they have tummy aches. I just pop them in the microwave for 30 seconds or so, and that usually calms whatever ache they have, or helps them get to sleep better at night! I love that you are using them for a game too. Have fun!
